WINGS OF HONNEAMISE remains one of my favorite anime full-length films. This year, it turns 25--and it still holds up, not just as a film, but as an example of the power of animation, when a dedicated crew puts their hearts and souls into making a masterpiece. This was the first motion picture from Gainax, who would later give us EVANGELION and FLCL.

Hard to believe that the film was not successful at first, but like all great movies (BLADE RUNNER, CITIZEN KANE) its stature has grown over the years. Personally, I consider it a true classic of science fiction films (in the same league as STAR WARS, 2001, and FORBIDDEN PLANET f'r instance).

This was done for the second issue of Colony Drop's fanzine, which should be released later this year. Not too keen on Shiro's helmet, and the background is rather iffy, but still....I'm glad I did this piece. It's the best way I can think of to honor a truly remarkable film.

Drawn in blue pencil and inked and colored in Manga Studio and Photoshop.

Original designs and story by Gainax.

Thanks much!

(Although I'm still trying to work on that "artist" thingie.....8-))

Hard to believe that other anime are also getting up there in years--MACROSS and the COBRA film and TV series both turn 30 this year, and GATCHAMAN turns 40!

Alot of my favorite movies, live action and animated, were flops when they first started out, but now, they're regarded as classics.

That's the truth. I mean, this year marks the 30th anniversaries for BLADE RUNNER, TRON, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, and John Carpenter's remake of THE THING....and those four films, while well-respected (and imitated!) today, were not box-office successes when they were first released and were torn to ribbons by the critics.

Things change.

I never watched it, what is it about because I am very interested now.

The story is about the effort to launch the first manned spaceflight on a planet that is NOT Earth--it's a planet where there are humans and animals, but while things look familiar--there are cars, ships, planes--it is not our world.

The Wikipedia entry is here: (but please ignore the "alternate Earth" line--this planet isn't Earth)

And here are two reviews of the film--one from Roger Ebert, and another from the Nihon Review:

Hope this helps!

Very nice work here with this piece.

Yeah... I was gonna make a comment on the size of Shiro's helmet.

Thanks, John!

And yeah, I did notice the weirdness about the helmet AFTER I finished the piece. Yeesh, I can be a slow pony sometimes....

Well, sometimes I don't notice critical mistakes until after I complete the piece.
