GENOCIDAL ORGAN anime film in 2015!

Genocidal Organ was the 2007 debut novel of Project Itoh (Keikaku Itoh).  He would later write the novel adaption to the game Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, but he passed away from cancer in 2009 right after finishing his third and final novel, Harmony.  He was only thirty-four.

Itoh's final novel won the top SF award prizes in Japan (the Seiun award and the Japan SF award), and its English translation won the Philip K. Dick Award Special Citation.  All three of his novels have been translated into English (courtesy of Viz through its Hiakasoru label; they also published the hugely popular translation of All You Need Is Kill).

I haven't read MGS: Guns of the Patriots or Harmony (although I plan to in the near future)....but I did read Genocidal Organ recently and I'm interested to see what it's anime adaptation will be like.  Genocidal Organ is a dark story, a story set in a world dealing with terrorist attacks, surveillance, and things basically falling apart.  It is not an easy book to read, but it does stay with you long after you turn the last page.  The story is unsettling: after the destruction of the city of Sarajevo by a nuclear bomb constructed by terrorists, the war on terror has ramped up.  But there is something else--a wave of genocides that are sweeping across countries around the world.

American agent Clavis Shepherd and his team track down the man they believe to be behind it all, the American known only as John Paul.  What they discover is truly horrifying.  John Paul has found a way to learn the "language" of genocide, and is using that method to spread genocides around the world.

Genocidal Organ is science fiction, no doubt about it, but the dark nature of the story doesn't shed a positive light on the US and our policies post-9-11.  Don't worry, it isn't a ham-fisted polemic but a chilling tale about how, well, easily humans can be made to turn on one another.  There's a lot of interesting tech that discussed in the book, but the focus is (and should be) on the characters.  The ending is...well, let's just say that as I put down the book all I could think was, "Man....that's f@&$ed up."

Read the book if you can--it isn't for everyone, I admit, but it's one of the best SF novels I've read this year (or any other year, to be honest).  If the anime adaptation turns out to be well done, then it will be a fitting tribute to a writer whose promising SF career that was cut short.
